How to Turn Off Report Junk on iPhone
Apple has recently rolled out a new feature in Messages called “Report Junk”. This will share junk text sender information with Apple and your network carrier to help tackle spam messages.
However, some iPhone users have reported that this option isn’t showing up. Here’s how to turn it off.

Messages apps on iPhones offer a convenient way to report spam text messages and block unknown senders. The feature has become more useful since Apple began aggressively policing its iMessage network in order to eliminate spam messages. However, some users are finding the “Report Junk” feature to be inconvenient, especially when it shows up as a secondary prompt every time they delete a text from an unfamiliar number. Fortunately, there is a simple way to turn off the extra prompt, so you can avoid accidentally reporting spam texts as junk by mistake.
In iOS 16, Apple added a new popup when you delete a conversation from a number not in your contact list. This prompt offers the options Delete, Delete and Report Junk, and Cancel. The ‘Report Junk’ option is the default choice, which has led to many accidental reports of important texts.
To avoid this problem, you need to change the behavior of the ‘Report Junk’ card in the Messages app settings. This can be done by going to Settings > Messages. Once you open the settings, go to the Blocked Sender Options section and turn off the ‘Report Junk’ button.
The next thing you need to do is to make sure that the number is not in your blocked senders list. If you are unsure, open the Messages app and tap on the message from the unknown number. If the message is in your blocked list, you will see a checkmark next to the name of the sender. If not, you need to add the number to your blocked list in order to prevent future unwanted messages. In addition, you should also delete any other conversations with the same sender.

On iOS 16 when deleting messages from unknown contacts in the Messages app you are now asked whether or not to also report the message as junk. This is a pretty useful feature to help keep your iMessage inbox clean and spam-free. But many users find it frustrating to have to click “Delete and Report Junk” whenever deleting a message from a number not saved in your Contacts.
This additional prompt interrupts the flow of deleting a message, which could result in mistakes. Many users found themselves accidentally reporting messages from their bank, carrier, and even family members as junk, when all they really wanted to do was delete the message.
Apple has acknowledged the frustration with this feature and tweaked it in iOS 16.1 beta, which will be available to users soon. In the new version, the message deletion confirmation popup has only two options – Delete and Delete and Report Junk. This will prevent accidental reports of messages that contain important information like transaction details, 2FA log-ins, locations, passwords, and other sensitive data.
If you still want to disable the reporting of junk texts, open your Settings app and select Mail. From there, tap on the account you want to modify and scroll down until you see the option for Message Filtering. Then, turn the switch for the “Report Junk” feature to the off position. If you have multiple accounts on your iPhone, repeat this process for each one that you want to disable the feature for. After disabling the Report Junk feature for an account, you will no longer have the ability to report spammy or harassing messages to Apple. But you can still report them directly to your network carrier.

Since iOS 16 was released, the Messages app has been plagued with a feature-turned-bug that prompts users to report junk messages. This second pop-up, which is shown after deleting an iMessage from an unknown number, has sparked concern among users because it could lead to important messages being accidentally reported as spam or junk by mistake.
To disable this annoying bug, open the Settings app and select Accounts. Scroll down to find Message Filtering and make sure that the toggle next to ‘Filter Unknown Senders’ is off. You can also manually report a junk text to Apple from the Messages app. This will send the message content and the sender’s information to Apple so that they can block the number from your account and stop you from receiving more unwanted messages in the future.
However, if you have already used the Report Junk feature on a message, you will still receive future messages from that sender until you block them in the Messages app. This is because it can take a significant amount of reports on a specific number for Apple to act.
Apple has acknowledged that the accidental use of the Report Junk option can be a nuisance, and they have released a fix in iOS 16.1. When you update your iPhone to iOS 16.1, you’ll only get a single prompt when deleting a message from an unknown number with the options to Delete, Delete and Report Junk, or Cancel.
- Select the account you want to turn off report junk for
If you’re tired of accidentally marking junk messages as spam on your iPhone, it’s easy to turn the feature off. You can do this by going to your Settings app and selecting the account you want to turn off report junk for. Once you select the account, you’ll see a toggle switch next to the name of the account. Toggle the switch to turn off the feature. You’ll still be able to report spam, but it won’t show up in your Messages app.
The Delete and Report Junk button in the Messages app is designed to help reduce the amount of spam you receive on your iPhone. Although the Delete and Report Junk option isn’t available for all types of SMS and MMS messages, it’s a great way to reduce the amount of spam you receive on your phone. If you have a spam-sending friend, consider turning the feature off to stop them from bothering you!
