A basic unit of information or knowledge. In the context of computer programming, a type is an abstraction that represents a set of data. In other words, a type defines the semantic meaning of a piece of information such as a number, a word, or an object in a program. A python programmer might write a function that takes input and outputs in the form of type. The function would then use the data type to determine what actions could be performed against the input and what kinds of output were permitted.
A type is also a classification used in the scientific literature to organize published research. Review articles present an evaluation of existing work in the field through comparison, analysis and discussion with a view to identifying gaps and providing guidance for new or future studies. They are a vital component of the literature and can be viewed as a stepping stone to new science.
Type
The term “type” is also an adjective describing a particular person or thing. A person might be described as a certain type of criminal or the kind of person who likes to read books. The word is often used with the prefix “of” to indicate a class or category: of a type furnace, for example, or of New England-style corn pudding. It is also occasionally found with no hyphen or with a word before it, as in this type of holder (see below). In this case, the expression is usually informal. type
